- Our hospital is the first eye hospital to be empanelled under Dr. YSR Aarogyasree Health
Scheme of the Government of Andhra Pradesh and provides cashless services to all BPL
people covered under the scheme. - In 2005 – the hospital was identified as one of the 6 best hospitals out of 2000 surveyed in
the region. The survey was conducted by BBC World in association with Sightsavers for the
visit of HM Sir John Major, the Former – Prime Minister of UK. - In 2002 – the State Government of Andhra Pradesh judged our hospital as the best NGO in
for delivering quality eye care services to the poor and needy population in the state.
About Us
Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Institute is one of the leading eye hospitals in Andhra Pradesh providing 8 sub specialities for eye treatment. We provide quality, comprehensive and affordable eye care to the people of Andhra Pradesh through our main hospital and secondary centres across the state. Through our community outreach programmes, we provide affordable eye care to those living in rural areas, who cannot access eye care.
We have 16 highly-qualified, experienced ophthalmologists specialising in subspecialties of ophthalmology rendering services not only to the people of Visakhapatnam but also to the neighbouring districts of Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and to the adjacent state of Odisha.
In 1997, the hospital was established and started functioning from a 2000 square feet two-room rented premises near the foothills of Simhachalam, a reputed pilgrim in Visakhapatnam.Â
In the first year of operations, the hospital focussed on cataract surgeries. Thereafter Vitreo Retina and Paediatric Ophthalmology services were added in 1999.
In the next two decades, the hospital expanded into a multi-speciality eye hospital offering 7 subspecialties in ophthalmology viz. Cataract, Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Orbit and Occuloplasty with equal facilities and care for Free and Paid Sections.
The main hospital in Naiduthota, Vepaguntais is built in a 1 lakh sq ft area (ground +4 stories) building with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.
Sankar Foundation is one the sought after institutes for medical education. Â Currently we are running 4 educational programmes. In 2012, we were accredited by the National Board of Examinations for DNB Ophthalmology. We have been successfully conducting DNB and Long-Term & Short-Term Fellowship programmes in ophthalmology.
Towards contributing to the development of ophthalmic human resources, the hospital is also conducting B.Sc (Optometry) graduation course recognized by Dr YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada; Diploma courses in Optometry and Ophthalmic Technician recognized by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh and Vocational Training Course in Multipurpose Health Care Workers (Female) and Ophthalmic Technician courses recognized by AP State Intermediate Board.Â
Our hospital is recognized under the National Programme of Control of Blindness, Government of India for training government ophthalmologists in surgical skill training. We have so far trained 166 doctors in both Phaco and SICS.
Sankar Foundation has a dedicated community outreach team conducting regular eye screening activities. The team travels for more than 100 km a day and conducts comprehensive eye screening at the doorstep of the underprivileged in the rural and tribal villages of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The hospital provides to and fro free transportation for patients who require cataract surgery. We also provide medication, boarding and lodging. A dedicated team of counselors and paramedical team takes care of the patients 24 x 7 at the Hospital.
