LONG TERM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMMES

FELLOWSHIP IN THE ANTERIOR SEGMENT

Duration

24 months and includes training in phacoemulsification during the last 6 months of the programme

Eligibility

MS/MD/DNB

Experienced faculty with expertise in training & mentorship.

Facilities for good care of patients in OPD and wards (200 beds). Well-equipped Surgical Operation theatres with side observer scopes, video display & video recording and editing for training and skill enhancement. Well-equipped wet lab for training in initial stages and for new procedures.

Fellows rotate through specialties of General Ophthalmology, Cornea, Glaucoma. Clinical activities  include attending to OPDs surgicals, Outreach with exposure to wide range of settings and cases.

SICS & Phaco-emulsification including complex situations for cataract surgeries in presence of experts to give good confidence to surgeons and good quality surgical output as monitored in feedbacks and audits.

Exposure to basic procedures  from Cornea and Glaucoma  specialties, including exposure  to refractive  surgeries.

Dr. Pallem Krishna Prasad received his medical degree from Andhra University. He completed his MS in Ophthalmology from the same university. Currently, he serves as Head of Medical Education at Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute, Visakhapatnam.

FELLOWSHIP IN GLAUCOMA

Duration

24 months and includes training in phacoemulsification during the last 6 months of the programme

Eligibility

MS / DNB / DO
Experienced faculty with good skills and interest in training & mentorship. Specialty focused  equipment  includes Gonioscopes,  Goldman Applanation Tonometers,
Visual Fields Analyzers, Fundus Photography, Optical Coherent Tomography, Pachymetry, Good Slit Lamps and Clinical Photography equipment, Pachymetry, Ultrasound Biomicroscope, Icare Tonometer, Surgical Gonioscopes.

Good exposure to trabeculectomies, adjunctive procedures, Aqueous sunt implants (AADI and AGV ) & MIGS procedures. In addition, the skill set of  Cataract surgeries, including SICS  and  Phaco-emulsification are also included as an important part.
Opportunities for training the junior fellows and  DNB residents so as to develop mentorship capacity and improved skills.

Dr. Tamineni Raveendra MBBS, MS, FAICO and FIGO

Dr.Tamineni Raveendra is the Director – CQI & Research at Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute, Visakhapatnam. He is a senior Glaucoma specialist. After completing his medical degree from MGM Medical College, Indore. He received his MS in degree in Ophthalmology, FAICO, and FIGO.

FELLOWSHIP IN CORNEA

Duration

24 months and includes training in phacoemulsification during last 6 months of the programme

Eligibility

MS / MD / DNB

Experienced faculty with good skills and interest in training & mentorship.

Anterior Segment OCT, Specular  Microscopy,  Sirius Corneal Topography, UVX for C3R.

Good exposure to Keratoconus  Clinic, Dry Eye Clinic, Refractive  Surgeries, Corneal Ulcers,  Ocular  Surface reconstruction, Keratoplasties (TKP, PKP, DALK, DSAEK, PDEK).  Opportunities for training so as to develop mentorship capacity and improved skills. In addition, the skill set of  Cataract surgeries, including SICS  and  Phaco-emulsification.

Dr.Nasrin, DO, DNB, FICS is General Ophthalmologist & Cornea specialist at Sankar
Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute, Visakhapatnam. She holds the designation of
 Director – Medical Administration & Training at the hospital.

Dr Nasrin completed her MBBS from Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada,
Andhra Pradesh, and received her DNB & Fellowship from Sankar Foundation,
Visakhapatnam.

FELLOWSHIP IN RETINA

Duration

24 months for MS/DNB, 30 months for DO

Eligibility

MS / MD / DNB
Experienced faculty with good skills and interest in training & mentorship. Equipment available includes: OCT (Topcon Triton Swept  Source), FFA, Zeiss Clarus 700 Widefield fundus  camera, Alcon  Constellation Vitrectomy machine, Zeiss Argon (green) Laser, Iridex Diode Laser, B-Scan and equipment
The fellows are trained in OPD procedures like 90 Diopter Lens, indirect Ophthalmoscopic examinations to diagnose various retinal conditions, B Scan and OCT interpretation, Lasers like PRP, Focal, Grid and Barrage laser. They are given a good exposure of Fundus FFA in diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy CSR vascular occlusions and other procedures.
The fellows will assist and perform various retinal surgeries like Pars Plana Vitrectomy, RD surgeries, IOL Drops, Nucleus Drops, IOFB removals, Core Vitrectomy Macula hole, epiretinal membrane etc. They will be trained in intravitreal injections like Avastin, Lucentis antibiotics and other, under experienced VR surgeons, including all types of VR surgeries.

Dr.Talabhaktula Krishna, MBBS, DO, FIVRS is the HOD for Vitreo & Retinal Services

After completing his MMBS, he completed DO and Fellowship from Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute, Visakhapatnam.

Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Duration

30 months for MS/DNB and 36 months for DO and includes training in phacoemulsification during last 6 months of programme.

Eligibility

MS / MD / DNB

The fellows are trained to develop skills in clinical assessment and judgement to deliver excellent patient care services. They are supervised and guided until they are capable of independently taking care of patients with confidence.

  1. Proper evaluation of patients by relevant history taking, complete examination and diagnosis
  2. Refraction; keratometry, lensometry and biometry
  3. Diagnosis and Medical management of glaucoma
  4. Correct refractive errors, administer amblyopia therapy and pick the correct strabismus patients for referral to pediatric ophthalmology
  5. Diagnose and follow diabetic retinopathy, and refer for laser in required conditions. Able to identify retinal breaks and conditions which need specialized retinal care
  6. First line management of uveitis, ordering and interpretation of tests, and competent in indications for referral
  7. Understand the basics in diagnosis and management of disorders of eyelids, adnexa and Orbit.
  8. To learn the complete evaluation of Neuro -ophthalmic conditions and to recognise when to refer.
  9. Management of ophthalmic emergencies
  10. Competent at reading visual fields, CT, MRI and other ocular diagnostic tools.
    They will be posted in Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina, Pediatric &Squint, Orbit and Oculoplasty, low vision Department and Gen Opthalmology.
  1. Cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation including SICS (1000 SICS surgery will be given during the fellowship), Phacoemulsification
  2. Chalazion, small lid lesions
  3. Pterygium
  4. Dacrycystorhinostomy
  5. Lid lacerations, anterior segment trauma
  6. Trabeculectomy
During last 6 months of their training period they will be trained in phacoemulsification and will perform 50 surgeries

 

The fellows will be actively involved in academic and research activity, and attend daily classes. They attend and actively participate in case presentations, seminars and journal club discussions. A research paper will be allotted to each fellow. They will submit protocols within 3 months, paper by 18 month and go forward for publication. They will participate in State/National Conferences.
They will be involved in training post graduate students.

Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology

Sankar Foundation Eye Institute offers Fellowship in paediatrics to provide a complete training in Medical and Surgical management of eye disorders in pediatric age-group and adult squint.

Duration

24 months for MS/DNB, 30 months for DO, and includes training in phacoemulsification during the last 6 months of programme

Eligibility

MS/MD/DNB

High volume of OPD  and  surgical exposure  potential. Experienced faculty with good skills and interest in training & mentorship.

(a) Diagnose and manage different refractive errors in infants, pre-school and school-going children; (b) Asthenopia symptoms, Allergic disorders, infections and  other treatable  problems in children; (c) management of amblyopia; (d) management of squint both conservatively and surgically; (e) Cataract and the special IOL power calculation related  issues; (f) management of neurological problems.

In addition, the skill set of  Cataract surgeries, including SICS  and  Phaco-emulsification, including exposure to Refractive  Surgeries, are an important part.

Dr. Ghantasala Suparna, MBBS,DO, FIPOS is a Senior Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmology at Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital & Research Institute, Visakhapatnam.

Dr. Suparna completed her MBBS from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. She received her PG. Diploma in Ophthalmology and fellowship from Arvind Eye Hospital, Madurai

Fellowship in Orbit and Oculoplasty

Duration

24 months and includes training in phacoemulsification during last 6 months of programme

Eligibility

MS / MD / DNB

High volume of OPD  and  surgical exposure  potential. Experienced faculty with good skills and interest in training & mentorship

Diagnosis and management of Lid and orbital eye disease comprehensively, including: (a) Lid Infections, entropion, ectropion, coloboma lids etc. (b) Diagnosis and management of Lacrimal system diseases like Acute and Chronic dacryocystitis, Lacrimal gland tumours etc. (c) Diagnoses and management of Thyroid ophthalmopathy. (d) Diagnosis and management of Orbital space occupying lesions. (e) Diagnosis and management of Lid and  Orbital Injuries including canalicular  tears.

In addition, the skill set of  Cataract surgeries, including SICS  and  Phaco-emulsification, including exposure to Refractive  Surgeries, are an important part.

Dr. Nakka Jaya Sirisha, MBBS, DO, Fellowship in Occuloplasty. Dr. Sirisha completed his MBBS from Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, and DO in ophthalmology from PBMA’s H .V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune.

Outreach Activities

Sankar Foundation Eye Institute is committed to working in the community. The main goal is to serve the poor and needy. The fellows will take part in community eye service by comprehensive eye disease screening and treating thepatients.
